1984 World Series, Game 5: Padres @ Tigers

MLB Vault
San Diego Padres 4 at Detroit Tigers 8, F — Game 5 started out poorly for the Padres when Mark Thurmond gave up three runs in the first inning. But they managed to rally back and were within one run of the Tigers in the eighth inning when Kirk Gibson came up to bat to face Goose Gossage. Though Gossage had been encouraged to walk Gibson, Gossage decided to pitch to him instead. Gibson responded with a three-run blast that clinched the Series for the Tigers. Sparky Anderson became the first manager to win World Championship titles in both the National and American Leagues.
