Oakland Athletics 9 at Boston Red Sox 1, F — A pitchers duel opened the first game of the ALCS between Oakland and Boston, as 2-time Cy Young Award winner, Roger Clemens faced 20-game winner Dave Stewart. Clemens kept Oakland scoreless for six innings, but Oakland managed to break through against the bullpen, scoring one run in the 7th, and another in 8th, to take the lead. Though only one run behind, the Red Sox saw their hopes of retaliation dashed in the 9th inning when Rickey Henderson led the way to a seven run inning for Oakland. Dennis Eckersley closed it out for the A’s, as Oakland took a 1-0 series lead.
