Detroit Tigers infielder Zack Short found out he was traded on golf course
Detroit Tigers infielder Zack Short speaks Dec. 2, 2020, about being traded from the Cubs and how he’s preparing for the 2021 season.
The Detroit Tigers will secure an additional top prospect in the 2021 MLB draft.
Along with the No. 3 overall selection, the organization will make the No. 31 pick in the draft, scheduled for July 11-13 in Atlanta as part of the 2021 MLB All-Star Game events.
The Tigers’ competitive balance Round A pick will be used between the end of the first round and the beginning of the second round. Last year, the Tigers had a Round B pick.
Competitive balance picks have been awarded to low-revenue and small-market teams since 2012 under the collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the players’ association.
OFFSEASON: Gauging what success, failure looks like for Detroit Tigers this offseason
WINTER MEETINGS: What to expect from the Detroit Tigers as MLB’s 2020 winter meetings begin
In the 2021 draft, six teams get Round A picks: the Miami Marlins (No. 30), Detroit Tigers (No. 31), Milwaukee Brewers (No. 32), Tampa Bay Rays (No. 33), Cincinnati Reds (No. 34) and Minnesota Twins (No. 35), according to MLB.com.
Eight more teams are slated to get Round B selections, for a total of 14 competitive balance picks. These eight teams will make their extra picks between the end of the second round and the start of the first round.
Because of impending free-agent signings of players who rejected qualifying offers, the picks could change. For example, if Trevor Bauer signs for $50 million or more, the Tigers’ competitive balance pick will fall from No. 31 to No. 32.
Right now, the Tigers have four top-100 picks in the draft: Nos. 3, 31, 38 and 75.
