Grossman, 31, is coming off the three best seasons of his career, including a 2020 campaign that saw him slash .241/.344/.482 (130 OPS+) with eight home runs across 192 plate appearances for the American League West division champion A’s. Grossman has long shown an acumen for getting on base (career .350 OBP), and he rated above average by Statcast’s Outs Above Average defensive metric in each of his two seasons in Oakland — including a solid +4 rating in left field last year.
Grossman could be the frontrunner for the Tigers’ left-field spot on Opening Day. Christin Stewart was likely penciled in there before the addition of Grossman, but Stewart struggled to below-average production (42 OPS+) across 36 games in 2020.
