Spencer Torkelson’s homer was a rare highlight in Wednesday’s action

Memphis Redbirds 4, Toledo Mud Hens 0 (box)

The offense just couldn’t get anything going in this one. Jacob Robson continued to get it done, collecting three or the Hens’ six hits. JaCoby Jones walked and singled, but there just weren’t many opportunities to mount a threat. Pedro Payano started for Toledo, tossing six innings with two runs allowed. Nolan Blackwood allowed a pair in the seventh. Gerson Moreno and Jason Foley were a little shaky in their innings of work, but kept the Redbirds off the board.

Robson: 3-4, 2B, CS

Payano (L, 0-2): 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 4 SO

Coming Up Next: RHP Mark Leiter Jr. (0-0, 9.00 ERA) starts against Redbirds’ LHP Matthew Liberatore (2-3, 4.26 ERA).

Akron RubberDucks 4, Erie SeaWolves 2 (Gm 1)(F/7)(box)

Joey Wentz made his first start since coming off the injured list and getting assigned to Erie. He’s still on a tight leash and working to get his stuff and command back, but he spun a pair of scoreless innings, pitching out of a bit of trouble created by issuing three walks along the way.

The SeaWolves got on the board first when Brady Policelli and Danny Woodrow singled to lead off the third inning. Spencer Torkelson drew a one out walk, and Dillon Dingler roped a single to left, scoring Policelli. Unfortunately, Cale Coshow, who took over for Wentz, allowed three runs in the bottom of the inning. Erie got one back on Danny Woodrow’s lead off triple in the fifth, followed by a sac fly from Ryan Kreidler. That was as close as they’d get. Ruben Garcia allowed Akron to get one back in the sixth, and Erie couldn’t manage a comeback in game one.

Dingler: 2-3, RBI, 2B, SO

Woodrow: 2-3, R, 3B, SO

Wentz: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, H, 3 BB, 2 SO

Akron RubberDucks 6, Erie SeaWolves 4 (Gm 2)(F/7)(box)

The SeaWolves launched three home runs in the night cap and still managed to get swept in Wednesday’s doubleheader. Erie took a first inning lead when Spencer Torkelson turned and pulverized his third home run, a two-run shot, since his promotion to Double-A last week. Elvin Rodriguez got the start, but he was shaky once again allowing two runs in the bottom of the first, and three runs overall. Ryan Kreidler and Andre Lipcius each hit a solo shot in the third to take a brief lead. It didn’t last too long, as Max Green’s control failed him in allowing a walk, a hit batter, and then a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Kreidler: 3-4, 2 R, RBI, HR, SO

Torkelson: 1-4, R, 2 RBI, HR

Rodriguez: 4.0 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 4 SO

Coming Up Next: They’ll get back at it on Thursday night at 6:35 pm EDT.

Dayton Dragons 4, West Michigan Whitecaps 1 (box)

The Whitecaps offense had their chances in this one, but cashed in just one run to fall on Wednesday night. Starter Adam Wolf allowed a two run shot in the third to open the scoring. West Michigan saw a would-be RBI single from Bryant Packard go to waste in the bottom of the first as Daniel Cabrera was thrown out at home trying to score from second. They did one back when Packard was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth. Trei Cruz bunted Packard over to second and he then took third on a wild pitch. After Reynaldo Rivera walked, Packard scored on an Eric de la Rosa ground out. Beyond that, and despite four extra base hits, the Whitecaps never mustered much of a threat. Reliever Angel Reyes allowed a run in both the seventh and eighth as the Dragons pulled away.

Cruz: 2-3, 2B, 3B

Packard: 1-3, R

Cabrera: 1-3, 2B, BB

Coming Up Next: These two meet up again at 7:05 p.m. EDT on Thursday.

Tampa Tarpons 4, Lakeland Flying Tigers 3 (box)

Lakeland just couldn’t find any offense in the late innings as they failed to mount a comeback in this one. Starter Joseph Salazar allowed a pair of first inning runs, but in the second, the Flying Tigers built a rally off a single and a pair of stolen bases from Jose de la Cruz with two outs. Jimmy Kerr walked, Derek Hill singled in de la Cruz, and then Victor Reyes was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gage Workman drew another walk to plate Kerr, but with a great opportunity to bust the game open, Nick Quintana grounded out. There wasn’t a better opportunity. Sam McMillan singled and took second on an error in the sixth, and then went to third and home on wild pitches for the Flygers final run.

Derek Hill: 2-5, RBI, SO

McMillan: 2-4, R, SO

Coming Up Next: RHP Gio Arriera (1-4, 4.32 ERA) takes on RHP Matt Sauer (0-1, 4.17 ERA) in game one of Thursday’s doubleheader in Lakeland.
