Another day, another Spencer Torkelson bomb

Bless You Boys

Toledo Mud Hens 5, Columbus Clippers 2 (box)

Mark Leiter Jr. threw his best game of the season and the Hens built an early lead to carry them over the Clippers on Wednesday. Leiter went five innings, allowing just one hit, a solo home run, while punching out seven on the night. JaCoby Jones led off the second with a single and later scored on a Dustin Garneau sac fly to open the scoring. In the third, A two run double from Yariel Gonzalez drove in Aderlin Rodriguez and Jones. After Leiter allowed a run in the fourth, Christin Stewart hit an inside-the-park home run to get it back. An Isaac Paredes single in the fifth scored Cole Peterson for their final run on the night. Wladimir Pinto collected his first save with the Hens.

Gonzalez: 2-4, 2 RBI, 2B, 2 SO

Stewart: 2-5, R, RBI, HR, 2 SO

Leiter Jr. (W, 1-0): 5.0 IP, ER, BB, 7 SO

Coming Up Next: RHP Ricardo Pinto (2-1, 3.86 ERA) gets the start for the Hens on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. ET.

Erie SeaWolves 3, Reading Fightin Phils 2 (box)

A RBI single from John Valente in the seventh to score Andre Lipcius was the difference on Wednesday as the SeaWolves held on to win. They got on the board early with a no doubt missile to left from Spencer Torkelson with Riley Greene aboard in the first inning. Elvin Rodriguez took it from there, allowing just one run through five innings of work. Unfortunately, he came back out in the sixth and allowed the Phils to tie things at two apiece before departing. Billy Lescher and Gerson Moreno locked it down from there, with Moreno collecting a six out save in the process.

Torkelson: 3-4, R, 2 RBI, HR, SO

Kreidler: 2-4, SO

Rodriguez: 5.2 IP, 2 ER, 8 H, BB, 5 SO

Coming Up Next: The SeaWolves and Phils will meet up again Thursday at 7:05 p.m. ET.

West Michigan Whitecaps 9, Peoria Chiefs 4 (box)

The Whitecaps took advantage of Chiefs starter Connor Lunn for a four run first inning and pulled away late to win on Wednesday. Eric de la Rosa started the game with a walk, then stole second base. Bryant Packard lined a single the opposite way and de la Rosa scored on a Wenceel Perez ground out. Parker Meadows was then hit by a pitch and Daniel Cabrera singled to right to load the bases. Trei Cruz popped out, but with the rally in danger, Cooper Johnson drew a walk and Reynaldo Rivera followed with a two run single to make it 4-0.

Starter Garrett Hill didn’t have a great outing, allowing three runs in the third inning. However, Xavier Javier and Austin Bergner combined for four scoreless innings to take things into the eighth. The Whitecaps had a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs in the top of the eighth, and Meadows drew a walk to load the bases. Daniel Cabrera flew out to end the threat. Michael Bienlien locked down the eighth inning, and the bats warmed up once again as the Chiefs bullpen fell apart.

Trei Cruz led off the top of the ninth with a double, and Johnson followed with a walk. Once again it was Rey Rivera who cashed the chips, this time with a two-run double. Andrew Navigato singled, moving Rivera to third, and then took second base standing up. De la Rosa drew a walk to load the bases, and there were still no outs in the inning. Packard unfortunately popped out to shortstop, however Wenceel Perez served a ball into right field to score Rivera. Parker Meadows followed with a sacrifice fly to score Navigato, and then the two remaining runners were balked to second and third with Daniel Cabrera at the dish. Cabrera got ahead in the count and singled in de la Rosa, then advanced to second on a wild pitch, before Cruz struck out to mercifully end the inning. Bienlien allowed a solo shot in the ninth before shutting it down.

Rivera: 2-4, R, 4 RBI, 2B, 2 SO

Packard: 2-6, R, SO

Cruz: 1-4, R, 2B, 2 BB, 2 SO

Coming Up Next: They’ll play two on Thursday to make up Tuesday’s rainout. First pitch for game one is set for 6:05 p.m. ET.

Daytona Tortugas 5, Lakeland Flying Tigers 0 (box)

Another game against the Tortugas, and little to report for the good guys. Gage Workman and Sam McMillan each singled and walked in the game, but the offense managed just three hits and three walks. Starter Nick Davila allowed two run, with the bullpen leaking three more as Daytona cruised.

Coming Up Next: They’ll meet up again at 7:05 p.m. ET on Thursday. RHP Ted Stuka (1-4, 7.57 ERA) gets the start for the Flying Tigers.
