Game notes: The Tigers open their series against the last-place Twins with Skubal, a rookie lefty with great stuff, but great inconsistency. Skubal’s plus pitches are exemplified with his 100 strikeouts in 82⅔ innings. His inconsistency lay bare in the form of long balls (17 home runs allowed in 15 starts) and walks (37, tied for sixth in the league). He hopes to right the ship after a rocky start to July (eight hits and five runs in five innings Saturday vs. the Chicago White Sox) following a strong June (2-0, 3.14 ERA over 28 2/3 innings). Minnesota’s disappointing season continued with a series loss to the White Sox earlier this week. Happ takes the mound on the heels of a rough outing in Kansas City. He couldn’t finish the fifth inning before giving up nine hits, two home runs and five earned runs total. On April 6, Happ pitching four innings at Comerica Park, giving up three hits, three walks and one earned run while striking out four. The Tigers won that game in the 10th, 4-3, helping give rise to Baddoo-mania.
Tigers lineup: TBA.
