Whitecaps Return Home with 13-4 Win

DAYTON, OH – The West Michigan Whitecaps snapped a seven-game losing streak on Saturday and started a winning streak with a 13-4 Sunday victory over the Dayton Dragons in front of 5,655 fans at Day Air Ballpark.

The Whitecaps finish their 12-game road trip with a 5-7 record, winning the first three games at Peoria before taking the final two against the first-place Dragons.

West Michigan set the tone with a four-run third inning as Cooper Johnson singled to plate the first tally. Parker Meadows followed with a two-run single to highlight the frame. Dayton answered with three runs in the next two innings featuring a run-scoring double by Francisco Urbaez and RBI-single by Michael Siani to bring the ‘Caps lead to 4-3. In the fifth, Rey Rivera blasted a three-run homer – his seventh home run of the season – to extend the West Michigan lead to 8-4 after five frames. An inning later, Gage Workman collected an RBI-triple, and Jose King collected his third hit of the day with a run-scoring double to increase the Whitecaps lead to 12-4. In the ninth, Wenceel Perez lifted a double to score Johnson and conclude the ‘Caps scoring in the contest with a 13-4 victory.

Whitecaps reliever Zach Shepherd (5-1) picked up his Whitecaps team-leading fifth victory by tossing a pair of scoreless innings in relief, Dragons starting pitcher Jacques Pucheu (3-1) gave up four runs in 2.2 innings in suffering his first loss of the season. The Whitecaps improve to 27-31 on the season as Dayton falls to 34-25. Meadows reached base in all five of his plate appearances to lead the West Michigan offense in one of the biggest offensive outputs of the season.
