‘Caps Fall in 16-9 Slugfest

MIDLAND, MI – The West Michigan Whitecaps gave up 11 runs in the second inning to match the most ever given up to an opponent in a single frame as part of a 16-9 loss to the Great Lakes Loons on Wednesday night at Dow Diamond.

The last time the Whitecaps gave up 11 runs in a singular inning came on May 18, 1996, to the Lansing Lugnuts, in a game that also saw a franchise record tied in base hits allowed (21) in a single game as part of a contest in which they used five pitchers. The Loons were also the last team to achieve 21 hits in a game played on August 31, 2010, in a home game at West Michigan.

The Whitecaps opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly by Daniel Cabrera in the first to take a 1-0 lead, but the Loons scored 15 unanswered runs beginning with a two-run homer by Justin Yurchak to take a 2-1 lead. In the second inning, RBI-singles by Zac Ching, Ryan Ward, Leonel Valera, and two for Yurchak and run-scoring doubles from Carson Taylor, Ching, Ryan January, and Andy Pages to highlight the biggest offensive inning for the Loons this season. After scoring two in the third, Jimmy Kerr collected an RBI-single in a game that saw the score at 16-2 headed into the eighth inning. West Michigan picked up four runs in the eighth with run-scoring singles by Wenceel Perez and Rey Rivera, along with a run-scoring double by Parker Meadows.

Loons reliever Jose Martinez (5-1) tossed 5.1 innings and gave up five runs to win his fifth game of the season, while Whitecaps starting pitcher Keider Montero (4-8) lost his eighth game after giving up four runs in just one inning. The Whitecaps fall to 34-39 on the season while the first-place Loons increase their record to 41-33. Meadows posted a multi-hit performance for the second straight night, while Eric De la Rosa reached base four times with three hits and scored twice in a losing cause.
