Detroit Tigers announce 2022 minor league coaches, player development staffers

Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Tigers officially announced Thursday coaching staffs for their minor league teams ahead of the 2022 season, along with introducing various newcomers to the player development department.

It’s the first staff under vice president of player development Ryan Garko, who replaced Dave Littlefield in late September.

The five managers are Gary Jones (Triple-A Toledo), Gabe Alvarez (Double-A Erie), Brayan Peña (High-A West Michigan), Andrew Graham (Low-A Lakeland) and Mike Alvarez (Florida Complex League).

Peña, Graham and Mike Alvarez received the same assignments they had for 2021 season.

The Tigers hired Jones on Dec. 2 to lead the Mud Hens, after firing last year’s manager. The 61-year-old spent the past four seasons as the manager for Triple-A Lehigh, an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. He worked as the Chicago Cubs’ third base coach from 2014-17.

Back in 1997, Jones managed now-Tigers manager AJ Hinch as a player for Triple-A Edmonton. That year, Jones secured one of his five manager of the year awards in his 18 seasons as a skipper in the minors.

Gabe Alvarez is new to the franchise’s coaching staff as the SeaWolves’ manager.

The 47-year-old replaced Arnie Beyeler, who has moved to an on-field coordinator job within the organization. Before joining the Tigers, Alvarez spent 11 seasons with USC as an assistant coach.

As a player, Alvarez made his MLB debut with the Tigers in June 1998. He played in the big leagues from 1998-2000, hitting .222 with seven home runs in 92 games.
