WEDNESDAY’S GAME: Tigers’ slump continues despite Joey Wentz’s debut in 9-0 loss to Oakland A’s

• Box score

Tigers lineup: TBA.

Game notes: The Tigers have scored 21 runs this month while playing 11 games in 11 days. That includes shutouts in three of their past five games. We’d like to say facing James Kaprelian is the answer to the Tigers woes – the 28-year-old, after all, enters Thursday with a 5.57 ERA, which should bode well for Tigers bats.

But that covers just two appearances this season: a May 1 start in which he allowed four runs over two innings against Cleveland, and a May 7 start in which he held Minnesota to just one run over 5⅔ innings.

MAKING MOVES? Tigers aren’t ready to send slumping Torkelson to Triple-A — not yet

An argument in the Tigers’ favor: They faced Kaprelian just last September, with essentially the same lineup, and produced four runs in four innings. In that game, both Miguel Cabrera, who is still on the Tigers’ roster, and Akil Baddoo, who is not, homered, and Jeimer Candelario doubled and walked. It’s not exactly the most encouraging track record, but after so many scoreless innings, we’ll take what we can get.

For the Tigers, Beau Brieske takes the mound for the fourth time this season, trying to snap an unusual streak: All three of the leadoff hitters he has faced have reached base. The first two, the Rockies’ Connor Joe and the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts, did it via home run, and the Astros’ Jose Altuve singled last weekend. Baby steps, we suppose.

After Thursday, the Tigers welcome the Baltimore Orioles to Comerica Park for a three-game series to wrap up the homestand, while the A’s head home to face the LA. Angels in Oakland, California.
