After four homers from the offense and a career day from Reese Olson, the Erie SeaWolves staved off a late-inning comeback from the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to win 8-7 on Friday at UPMC Park.

For the third straight game in the series, the SeaWolves scored first. Erie was powered by a Kerry Carpenter solo shot. Quincy Nieporte joined in with the early onslaught with a seventh blast of the year in the second to make it 2-0 ‘Wolves.

The SeaWolves tacked up a run in the third after Andre Lipcius drove in Kerry Carpenter with a base knock. In the following inning, Daniel Cabrera tripled with one man out and Andrew Navigato knocked in his teammate with an RBI single.

New Hampshire got on the board in the fifth with a Rafael Lantigua two-run double that knocked out Reese Olson from the game to cut the deficit to 4-2. Olson was unable to factor in the decision after going 4.2 frames, allowing four hits, two runs, one earned run, walking two, and striking out a career-high 11 batters.

However, in the bottom half of the frame, Lipcius continued with the hot stick by belting a two-run homer his second homer in two days. Erie then loaded the bases which set the stage after Andrew Navigato who crushed a ball to deep center field but he was robbed of a grand slam by Zac Cook. He settled for a sac fly instead to make it a 7-2 ballgame.

With the exception of Carpenter’s second jack of the game in the eighth — his 11th homer of the season to tie him with New Hampshire’s Orelvis Martinez for the Eastern League lead, Erie’s bats were limited from the sixth to the eighth innings.

The Cats were then able to claw back with five runs in the last two frames. They had runners on first and third with one out in the eighth with Erie holding onto a 7-4 lead. Despite the adversity, Gerson Moreno buckled down to strike out John Aiello. After yielding a first-pitch ball to Cook, Zac Houston entered the game and garnered his first strikeout of the evening to escape the jam.

Trailing 8-4 in the ninth, New Hampshire cashed in on a double and walk with one out with a Luis De Los Santos RBI triple. Brendan White entered the fray and was greeted by a Will Robertson double to make it 8-7. The right-hander finally put an end to the rally as he induced a ground ball to pick up his third save of the season.

Earning the win was Shea Spitzbarth (1-0). He went 1.1 scoreless innings, yielding one walk, no hits, and striking out three. Erie set a season-high with 20 strikeouts with Olson and Spitzbarth combining for 14 punchouts, while Moreno and Houston each rang up three hitters.

Receiving the loss was Parker Schultz (2-4). He exited the game after giving up six hits, four runs (all earned), and striking out three batters in 3.1 innings.
