Detroit Tigers pitching prospect Garrett Hill to debut; Rony García to 15-day injured list

Detroit Free Press

Before Saturday’s game, Detroit Tigers right-hander Rony García reported shoulder soreness.

The 24-year-old has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder soreness, meaning he will miss Monday’s start as part of the Tigers’ doubleheader against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park.

“MRI came back fine,” manager A.J. Hinch said after Saturday’s 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals. “There’s some inflammation that he’s going to have to work through. Hopefully, he’ll be throwing and playing catch in the next couple of days, so he’s not shut down.”

For Monday’s split doubleheader, right-hander Garrett Hill will make his MLB debut in one of the two games. The other starter will be righty Alex Faedo, serving as the 27th player, added to the roster for the twinbill.

CENTRAL TIME: Toss playoffs out the window, but Tigers have great chance to make up ground

Hill is the Tigers’ No. 23 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.

He was drafted in the 26th round (No. 765 overall) in 2018 out of San Diego State University.

In 2022, Hill has a 3.23 ERA with 25 walks and 98 strikeouts across 69⅔ innings in 15 starts for Double-A Erie (seven starts) and Triple-A Toledo (eight starts). For the Mud Hens, the 26-year-old has a 4.06 ERA with 15 walks and 46 strikeouts in 37⅔ innings.

WAITING FOR E-ROD: ‘No communication’ between Tigers, Eduardo Rodriguez (restricted list)

Before Hill joins the 26-man roster, the Tigers need to clear space for him to join the 40-man roster. Someone — most likely right-hander Matt Manning — will shift to the 60-day injured list to open a spot.

Manning has been on the 10-day IL since April 17. He’s close to beginning a rehab stint with Low-A Lakeland and Triple-A Toledo, but a big-league return isn’t likely before late July.

The only other Tiger on the 10-day IL — not including García on the 15-day IL injured list — is outfielder Austin Meadows, but he is expected to return to the Tigers at some point during the team’s upcoming road trip to Chicago, Kansas City and Cleveland.
