‘A LOT OF FUN’: Riley Greene has given Tigers an unmistakable spark

SEIDEL: Spencer Torkelson’s struggles sum up this Tigers season perfectly

Game notes: The Tigers are coming off an impressive series sweep vs. the Cleveland Guardians. Now they get the White Sox, who have been disappointing most of the season and have continued to play mediocre ball, going 6-4 in their last 10 games. The Sox offense was projected as a strength and is hitting for average (top 10 in batting average, hits and doubles) but is closer to the bottom of the league in runs, home runs and OPS. Oddly enough, it’s on the South Side where the White Sox have struggled most, sporting a playoff-team-esque 22-18 record on the road (the Tigers, on the other hand, have a very-bad-team-esque 11-23 road record). But with the American League East looking like a lock to get four teams in the postseason, it’s AL Central title or bust for Tony La Russa and the Pale Hose if they want a chance at meeting lofty preseason goals. Cease has been great this year and during two starts held the Tigers to two total runs (one earned) and 16 strikeouts over 10 innings.

Thanks to an ugly June (10-15 while being outscored by 44 runs), the Tigers’ goals have shifted from contending to just being competitive. A.J. Hinch’s club has done a much better job of that in July, winning five of its first seven games. Key behind the resurgence are rookie Riley Greene (.274/.384/.787 in just over two weeks of play) and also Miguel Cabrera, who isn’t slugging as much, but is hitting .308 with a sturdy .348 on-base percentage.

The series stretches the rest of the weekend, with 8:10 p.m. starts Friday and Saturday and a 2:10 p.m. first pitch Sunday before the Tigers continue on to Kansas City.
