Game notes: Hutchison is making his second career start vs. the Guardians. He’s been solid of late, holding the Chicago White Sox to two runs over six innings on July 10 and the Guardians to one run over five innings July 5. Coming into Thursday’s game, Jonathan Schoop had been better for the Tigers, hitting .360 this month over 13 games (50 at-bats), but just two of his 18 hits went for extra bases. Javier Baez is doing a whole lot of slugging (two home runs and five doubles in 14 games) but not a lot of hitting for average (.218 over 55 at-bats). Miguel Cabrera hasn’t been hitting for power all season but now his average has suffered this month (.214) and his slugging found a way to get lower (.238) than his singles-happy season average (.349).

McKenzie hasn’t allowed a run in 13 innings this month and pitched well in his last matchup with the Tigers. Over 7⅔ innings on May 29, he gave up just two runs and four hits, but the Tigers won, 4-3. Andres Gimenez leads the Guardians in batting average (.290) this year but is hitting just .167 in 18 at-bats vs. the Tigers. Jose Ramirez, second on the team in BA, is slashing .226/.333/.581 over 31 ABs vs. Detroit.

The teams play again at  4:10 p.m. Saturday and 1:40 p.m. Sunday.
