GAME RECAP (TOLEDO, OH): Coming off a series defeat against the Columbus Clippers, the Mud Hens continued their home stand, beginning a new series with the Indianapolis Indians. RHP Nivaldo Rodriguez took the mound for Toledo, hoping to lead the Mud Hens to victory for the series opener.

After the Indians struck in the first with a grand slam, the Mud Hens would respond in the second. DH Kerry Carpenter hit a solo shot to left center, cutting Indianapolis’s lead to a score of 4-1. The Mud Hens crept closer to the Indians, as 3B Brendon Davis tallied his 20th RBI of the year in the fourth inning, driving in 1B Spencer Torkelson. Torkelson led the inning with an infield single.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Mud Hens were looking to close the gap even further. CF Derek Hill would lead off, reaching first on an error. Then, C Ali Sanchez would follow up with a single. Next batter, RF Daz Cameron drove in CF Derek Hill with a single to right, making the score 4-3, in favor of the Indians. However, the Indians would answer back with a solo shot in the sixth. The new score was 5-3, which gave them their 2-run lead back.

After the Mud Hens went scoreless in the sixth, RF Daz Cameron would reach on a walk in the seventh. Then, 1B Josh Lester would drive in Cameron with an RBI double, closing the gap again. The score was now 5-4, and Lester had his 55th RBI of the year, along with 24 doubles. He leads the team in both categories. RHP Derek Law would come in the ninth, giving up no runs after the Indians put the first two men on base. However, the Hens would go down 1-2-3, as Toledo fell in the series opener, with a score of 5-4.

“We had the opportunities; we just could not get that big hit. It just didn’t happen tonight. I am looking to see Matt Manning continue to improve tomorrow.” Manager, Lloyd McLendon said.

In tonight’s loss, RF Daz Cameron was the lone hitter for Toledo with a multi-hit game, going 2-4, with an RBI single. The Mud Hens bullpen would go 8.1 innings of work, giving up just one earned run and two walks, while tallying eight strikeouts, using five pitchers.
