DES MOINES, Iowa – The Mud Hens were looking to get back to their winning ways, as they headed into tonight’s game, continuing their series with the Iowa Cubs. The Mud Hens currently trailed in the series, winning only two out of the five games so far in the series. The Detroit prospect (#25), RHP Austin Bergner would make his AAA debut, after getting called up from the Erie Seawolves (AA) in the beginning of the week.

The game would begin as a pitcher’s duel, until the fifth inning, when the bats came alive for the Mud Hens. The Mud Hens scored first with a solo shot by Kerry Carpenter. Carpenter now has his seventh homer as a Mud Hen, along with 29 home runs this year in the MiLB. His home run would also extend his hitting streak to eight games. In the next inning, the Mud Hens would put up a crooked inning, scoring four runs. Zack Short would hit his tenth home run against his former team, giving the Hens a 2-0 lead. After a one-out walk drawn by Ryan Kreidler, Josh Lester would drive him in with an RBI double. Lester now leads the team with 28 doubles and 56 RBIs, this season. With two outs and runners on second and third, Brendon Davis would drive in Lester and Spencer Torkelson with an RBI single, extending the Mud Hens lead to a score of 5-0.

The offense would strike once more for Toledo, as Kerry Carpenter would hit his first triple of the year to left field. Brendon Davis once again came in clutch with two away, as he doubled to drive in Carpenter. Davis now has a total of 22 RBIs and 12 doubles on the year, with Toledo.

On the pitching side for the Mud Hens, RHP Austin Bergner would have a night to remember. On his AAA debut, he went five strong innings. He would not allow a single run, giving up just three hits and a walk. During his five innings of work, he struck out five I-Cubs. RHP Nick Vincent, RHP Jacob Barnes, and LHP Sam Howard would each get an inning of work, tallying a strikeout for themselves. RHP Shea Spitzbarth would close out the ninth, as the Mud Hens obtained their sixth shutout of the season.
