BELOIT, WI – A walk-off RBI-single by Ynmanol Marinez sent the West Michigan Whitecaps to a crushing defeat and their fourth loss in five games in a 6-5 loss in ten innings to the Beloit Sky Carp on Friday night in front of 2,101 fans at ABC Supply Stadium.

Friday’s loss is just the second game during the 2022 season in which West Michigan lost despite leading after eight innings, making them 40-2 in those scenarios. The loss, coupled with a Lake County Captains win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps, has trimmed West Michigan’s lead in the Midwest League Eastern Division second-half race to just one game. Next week, the Whitecaps and Captains open a six-game series beginning Tuesday night at LMCU Ballpark.

Repeating a pattern from the first three games of this series, the team who scored the first run lost the contest. Much of Friday’s offense came in the opening inning when the ‘Caps opened the scoring with a run-scoring double from Jake Holton before Austin Murr chipped in a run-scoring single to give West Michigan a 2-0 lead. The bottom of the first saw Beloit score three times, as Victor Mesa Jr. and Zach Zubia each logged a run-scoring single in the frame. In the third, Jake Holton was hit in the head with a pitch, forcing him to leave the ballgame. The hit-by-pitch marked the second consecutive day Holton was hit in the head and forced to leave the contest. The score remained tied until a pair of sacrifice flies by Josh Crouch, and Trei Cruz gave the ‘Caps a 4-3 lead. Beloit rallied for the tying run in the ninth when Kyler Castillo’s groundball glanced off third baseman Carlos Irigoyen’s glove and into left field for an RBI single, sending the game to extra frames. In the tenth, the ‘Caps plated a run on an Austin Murr fielder’s choice before the Sky Carp rallied again in the bottom of the inning. Lefty Gabe Sequeira failed to record an out against the three batters he faced as Mesa tied the game with a run-scoring single. RJ Petit entered in relief, and Ynmanol Marinez delivered the win with an RBI-single of his own, sending West Michigan to a heartbreaking loss.

The Whitecaps record moves to 57-49 and 26-14 in the second half. The Sky Carp improve to 22-18 and 53-52 overall. Chandler Joswiak (5-0) earned his fifth win despite allowing three runs in three innings, while Sequeira (4-3) takes his third loss of the season. Murr went 2-for-5 with two RBI to lead the ‘Caps offense in a losing cause. Holton and outfielder Esney Chacon each left the ballgame before its conclusion.
