ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Pinch-hit home run from Zack Short blasts Tigers to 6-4 win over Royals
Game notes: Alex Faedo returns to the mound, and despite his 0-2 record, he has shown some promising signs. Faedo has a 4.60 ERA in 15⅔ innings pitched this season, but that has been disproportionately hurt by a few pitches the right-hander would love to have back. Faedo has given up five home runs in three outings, something that he needs to limit going forward. He has thrown 71% of his pitches for strikes and has avoided walks, giving up one so far.
The Tigers face Lucas Giolito, the 6-foot-6 right-hander who has 60 strikeouts in 10 starts in 2023. Giolito has given up eight home runs but has improved his ERA from 4.90 last year to 3.62 this year. Giolito gave up six hits but just one run in his most recent outing, and the White Sox beat the Royals, 5-1.
