DOCTOR, DOCTOR: Explaining when Tigers’ Eduardo Rodriguez, Riley Greene could return from injuries
SHAWN WINDSOR: Tigers’ win after a pair of injury losses a true indication of team’s character
Game notes: The Tigers are ailing, with ace Eduardo Rodriguez and slugger Riley Greene on the IL for the time being, but they’ll get a glimpse of the future today when Reese Olson makes his big-league debut in E-Rod’s rotation spot against the White Sox in Chicago at 8:10 p.m. on Bally Sports Detroit. Olson, who joined the organization in a 2021 trade deadline deal with the Brewers*, has a 6.38 ERA with 47 strikeouts and 22 walks over 36⅔ innings this season, but he has been pitching much better as of late. Over his past three starts, Olson has struck out 22 while walking six and allowing two runs over 14⅓ innings, for a 1.26 ERA.
WEDNESDAY’S VICTORY: Newcomer Jake Marisnick has winning RBI as Tigers scrape by Texas Rangers, 3-2
*Olson is the latest link in a transaction chain that goes all the way back to Curtis Granderson’s drafting in 2002. The chain: Olson came from the Brewers in exchange for a package that included left-hander Daniel Norris, who joined the Tigers as part of the return for left-hander David Price in 2015. Price came to the Tigers in a 2014 deal that included outfielder Austin Jackson, who arrived in Detroit in a 2009 deal that sent Granderson to the New York Yankees. Granderson, of course, was the Tigers’ third-round pick out of UIC in 2002. Whew.
UPDATE: The White Sox will send Mike Clevinger to the mound in his first start off the injured list (wrist inflammation). The righty has owned the Tigers over his career, with an 8-2 record, a 1.74 ERA and 77 strikeouts over 72⅓ innings. He hasn’t faced many of the current Tigers, however, with only Miguel Cabrera (26 plate appearances, .808 OPS) and Jonathan Schoop (13 PA, .641 OPS) having more than three plate appearances against him.
After tonight’s game, the Tigers and ChiSox finish things up with a pair of matinees Saturday and Sunday, both starting at 2:10 p.m. The Tigers wont have much down time, though; they’ll head right to Philly for a three-game set with the Phillies beginning Monday night. The White Sox, meanwhile, get Monday off before hoofing it (or maybe just flying) to the Big Apple to take on the Yankees on Tuesday-Thursday.
