Portland scored 11 unanswered runs as they blew out Erie, 12-3

The Sea Dogs scored first with a first-inning solo home run hit by Tyler McDonough off Erie starter Sawyer Gipson-Long. The SeaWolves rebounded with a three-spot in the second inning against Portland starter Wyatt Olds. Trei Cruz doubled home a run, Grant Witherspoon had an RBI groundout, and Colt Keith notched an RBI single. Erie led 3-1 after two frames.

Portland knocked Gipson-Long out of the game with a four-run third inning. Nick Yorke and Tyler McDonough had run-scoring extra-base hits. Erie reliever Bryce Tassin met a similar fate in the fourth inning. He allowed four runs, including two on Niko Kavadas’ two-run single.

Portland added two more in the sixth and a run in the seventh on Yorke’s home run off RJ Petit. Petit made his Double-A debut for Erie and threw 2.1 innings with two hits, one run, and three strikeouts.

Ben Malgeri had his first two Double-A hits for Erie. Trei Cruz had his second three-hit game of the season. Colt Keith had his fifth multi-hit game of the season, which ties him with Grant Witherspoon for the team lead.

Dylan Spacke (1-0) got the win in relief for Portland. He threw 3.1 scoreless innings. Gipson-Long (2-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits in three innings with six strikeouts.

Erie will look to break their three-game losing streak tomorrow against Portland. Wilmer Flores faces Sterling Sharp at 1:35 p.m.
