Late runs sank Erie in the opener in Akron as the SeaWolves fell 4-2.

Jace Jung started the scoring early against rehabbing Guardians pitcher Cal Quantrill. In the first inning, Jung blasted his fifth Erie home run to give the Howlers a 1-0 lead.

Erie and Akron paused for a one-hour and nine-minute rain delay during the top of the fourth inning.

After the delay, the RubberDucks tied the game in the fifth against Austin Bergner. They loaded the bases ahead of Connor Kokx’s RBI infield single.

The SeaWolves jumped back ahead in the sixth inning when Ben Malgeri lined an RBI single with two outs against Tommy Mace.

Akron tied the game in the bottom of that sixth frame against Yaya Chentouf. With two on and one out, Bryce Ball grounded an RBI single to make it 2-2.

It was Ball again who put the Ducks ahead in the eighth inning against RJ Petit. After Korey Holland’s leadoff double, Ball scored him with his third hit of the game. Micael Ramirez then hit an RBI double which scored Ball and extended the lead to 4-2.

Mace (4-3) earned the win in relief of Quantrill. Petit (2-3) took the loss. Bradley Hanner secured his eighth save.

The series continues at 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday at Ty Madden opposes Hunter Stanley.
