Erie held on for a one-run win over Somerset, 4-3.

The SeaWolves jumped to a lead in the third inning against Somerset starter Matt Sauer. Ben Malgeri, Luis Santana, and Jace Jung hit consecutive solo home runs to give the SeaWolves a 3-0 lead. It was the first time Erie has achieved that feat since August 12, 2021 when Riley Greene, Ryan Kreidler, and Spencer Torkelson did it in the first inning against Altoona.

Somerset got a pair back against Lael Lockhart in the fourth. With two on and two out, Max Burt hit an RBI single to make it 3-1. With Trey Sweeney batting, Erie catcher Alonzo Rubalcaba made a throwing error on a back pick to first base, allowing Grant Richardson to score from third and make it 3-2.

Erie held that lead into the eighth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Daniel Cabrera tapped a slow groundout, allowing Jake Holton to score from third with an insurance run.

Somerset got that run back instantly in the bottom of the frame. After the first two reached against Bryce Tassin, Anthony Seigler hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3.

Blake Holub was on for the ninth inning. The leadoff man reached on Danny Serretti’s fielding error. Ben Rice’s single put runners on the corners with one out. Spencer Jones grounded into a game-ending double play to end the threat.

Holub got his seventh save. Lockhart (5-2) earned the win. Matt Sauer (4-4) took the loss.

Ty Madden pitches for Erie on Friday opposed by Blane Abeyta. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
