The Tigers won’t head to any arbitration hearings in 2023, as they signed their remaining arbitration-eligible players to one-year deals on Friday.
Right-handers José Cisnero and Rony García agreed to terms with the Tigers, the club announced. Friday was the deadline to exchange salary figures before heading to an arbitration hearing in February.
If an agreement had not been reached, one of the two salaries would have been selected after each side makes its case. The Tigers have typically avoided hearings; Michael Fulmer in 2019 remains the only Detroit player to go to arbitration since ’01, and the club won that case. But president of baseball operations Scott Harris avoided that this year.
Financial terms of the deals were not announced. MLB Network insider Jon Heyman reported that Cisnero will make $2.287 million this season. Per Cot’s Baseball Contracts, García was projected to make $895,000.
Cisnero, 33, was limited to only 25 innings in the big leagues last season because of a right shoulder strain, but he had a 1.08 ERA upon returning, with 23 strikeouts to 15 hits allowed.
García also missed most of last season with right shoulder soreness, ending the campaign on the 60-day injured list. The 25-year-old pitched 51 innings in the big leagues with a 4.41 ERA, striking out 48 while walking 13.
The Tigers had already avoided arbitration this offseason with one-year deals for lefty Tyler Alexander ($1.875 million) and outfielder Austin Meadows ($4.3 million).
