The SeaWolves snapped a three-game skid by taking down the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 4-3, on Friday night at The Diamond.

The SeaWolves jumped ahead for the third time in the series in the top of the first inning. Colt Keith singled with one out off of Mason Black, extending his hitting streak to a team-high nine straight games. Jake Holton walked with two outs, putting a pair on. Mario Feliciano and Josh Crouch each followed with consecutive RBI singles for a 2-0 lead.

Richmond responded in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Ty Madden. Ishmael Munguia led off with a base hit. Luis Matos then sent a line drive to center that Grant Witherspoon made a diving attempt on, but could not catch. Witherspoon fired an errant throw to the backstop allowing Munguia to score for first. Madden would work through the inning with no further damage.

Erie built a three-run lead in the top of the second. Wenceel Perez reached on a two-out error, keeping the inning alive for Keith. Keith blasted his second home run of the season, this time to straight away centerfield.

The Squirrels closed the gap to a pair of runs in the third. Matos and Tyler Fitzgerald each singled with one out, putting runners on the corners for Brett Auerbach. Auerbach grounded into what appeared to be an inning-ending double play but an errant throw to first from Wenceel Perez allowed Matos to score.

Madden finish after four innings and took his third straight no-decision to start the season. He allowed a pair of unearned runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Richmond closed the gap to a run in the fifth against Erie reliever Dario Gardea. Simon Whiteman and Munguia each singled and Tyler Fitzgerald walked, loading the bases. Gardea balked in a run but escaped the jam with by striking out Auerbach.

Billy Lescher entered for Erie in the sixth and set the Squirrels down in order in two innings of work.

Austin Berger came into the game in the eighth and worked around a two-out error, keeping the ‘Wolves in the lead into the ninth. He walked the leadoff man in the ninth in Carter Aldrete but followed by retiring the side in order, earning his first save of the season. It was Bergner’s first save since May 12, 2021 when he was pitching in Lakeland.

Gardea (1-0) earned the win allowing a run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in one inning.

Black (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 2.1 innings.
