The Toledo Mud Hens defeated the Syracuse Mets 12-2 in Sunday’s series finale at Fifth Third Field. They split this week’s series 3-3 with the Mets and improved their overall record to 17-9. With today’s win, Toledo is now tied for first place in the International League’s West Division with Iowa (16-8) and Memphis (17-9, have yet to play this afternoon).
Alex Faedo started the game for Toledo and was nearly perfect through four innings. He allowed just one batter to reach base (a walk to Danny Mendick), but otherwise recorded outs of every other batter he faced. His final stat line was 4.0 innings pitched, zero hits, zero runs, one walk, and five strikeouts. For the year, he lowered his ERA to an even 2.50.
Toledo offense was clicking from the very start. After a bases loaded walk to Jonathan Davis, Jermaine Palacios broke the game open with a grand slam to give Toledo a 5-0 lead in the first inning. RBI singles in the second and fourth innings from Andre Lipcius and Justyn-Henry Malloy respectively increased their lead to 7-0.
Another big inning in the sixth further increased their lead to 11-0. Jonathan Davis and Parker Meadows each hit RBI doubles and Jermaine Palacios and Corey Joyce each hit sacrifice flies in the inning to add four runs to their lead. The final Toledo run would come two innings later, when Brendon Davis hit a solo home run off Mets reliever William Woods.
The Mud Hens scored 12 runs on 13 hits. Each Toledo batter recorded at least one hit except for Corey Joyce, who himself had two walks and a sac fly. Donny Sands led today’s squad in hits with three, Brendon Davis led in runs with three, and Jermaine Palacios led in RBIs with five. The Hens saw the ball well, walking eight times compared to five strikeouts.
Toledo starts another home series at Fifth Third Field this Tuesday at 6:05 pm against Indianapolis.
