The pitching matchup consisted of Zach Logue for the Mud Hens and Paolo Espino for the Red Wings.

TOLEDO – The Toledo Mud Hens fell to the Rochester Red Wings 6-4 on Sunday night at Fifth Third Field.

The pitching matchup consisted of Zach Logue for the Mud Hens and Paolo Espino for the Red Wings.

Logue would retire the Red Wings in order to begin the ballgame, striking out Darren Baker, getting Derek Hill to flyout and Jake Alu to popout.

Justyn-Henry Malloy would draw a walk to open up the evening for the Mud Hens offense before being stranded after Espino retired the next three Hens hitters.

Logue would allow back-to-back singles to Carter Kieboom and Nomar Mazara to begin the second inning. Logue would then induce a strikeout and a double play to escape the jam.

Grant Witherspoon hit a one-out single and swiped second base in the second inning before getting stranded by Espino following a flyout and a groundout.

Logue came out firing again in the third inning, retiring the side in order by striking out Luis Torrens, getting Riche Martin to popout and Baker to strikeout.

Corey Joyce would hit a leadoff double in the third inning to get the Mud Hens offense rolling. Malloy walked to put two Hens on base, before Kerry Carpenter drove a single to left to load the bases. Parker Meadows hit a RBI single and a second run came home due to an error on the play to put the Mud Hens up 2-0. Andre Lipcius grounded into a fielder’s choice that allowed Carpenter to score and put the Mud Hens up 3-0.

Alu would draw a one-out walk against Logue in the fourth before a foul flyout and a strikeout retired the side for the Red Wings.

Espino set the Mud Hens down in order for the first time in the fourth inning, getting back-to-back strikeouts on Andrew Knapp and Michael Papierski and getting Joyce to groundout.

Logue would head back out for the fifth inning. Drew Millas would draw a one-out walk, followed by a two-out single by Martin would set-up a two-run triple for Baker, who made the game 3-2. Hill would reach on an RBI infield single to tie the game at 3-3. That would end the night for Logue, as Braden Bristo would enter the game. Bristo would strikeout Alu to retire the side in the fifth inning for the Red Wings. Logue’s final line was 4.2 innings pitched, allowing three runs on five hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. Alu would be the only batter Bristo would face, going 0.1 inning, striking out one.

Espino would return to the mound in the fifth inning, allowing a one-out walk to Carpenter before inducing a flyout and a strikeout to end the inning. Espino’s night would be over, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned), on four hits, three walks and five strikeouts. Espino would pick up the win, improving his record to 3-1.

Sam Clay would enter the game in the sixth inning from the Mud Hens bullpen. The Red Wings got rolling again right away. Kieboom opened up the inning with a leadoff walk, followed by a single by Mazara set-up a scoring chance for the Red Wings. Travis Blankenhorn tallied an RBI single to put the Red Wings in front 4-3. Torrens would follow with a RBI single of his own to put Rochester up 5-3. After a walk by Martin, Baker popped out to end the inning. That would be the end of the night for Clay, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks. Clay would pick up the loss for his first decision of the year, falling to a record of 0-1.

Alberto Baldonado entered the game in the sixth inning for the Red Wings. Lipcius opened the inning with a leadoff single. Lipcius would come around to score on a two-out RBI double by Papierski to bring the score to 5-4 Rochester. Baldonado’s night would end with a final line of 1.0 inning pitched, allowing one run on two hits and one strikeout while picking up his eighth hold.

Rony Garcia would enter the game next for the Mud Hens in the seventh inning. Hill would hit a leadoff single and swipe second base to get into scoring position with no outs. Hill would remain on base until a two-out RBI double by Mazara to put the score to 6-4 for the Red Wings. Garcia would strikeout Blankenhorn to end the inning.

Hobie Harris would enter the game in the seventh inning for the Red Wings. Malloy would greet Harris with a leadoff single to bring the tying-run to the plate. Harris would retire the next two Hens hitters before walking Meadows. However, Lipcius would groundout to end the inning. Harris would finish with a final line of 1.0 inning pitched, allowing one hit and one walk en route to his first hold of the season.

Garcia would come back out for the eighth inning. Millas would hit a leadoff double that would be followed by a Torrens walk. Garcia would strikeout Martin before being pulled in favor of Matt Wisler. Wisler would get Baker to lineout and Hill to strikeout to escape the logjam. Garcia’s final line would be 1.1 innings pitched, allowing one run on three hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Wisler’s night would also come to a close, pitching 0.2 inning, tallying one strikeout.

Jose A. Ferrer would enter the game for the Red Wings in the eighth inning. Ferrer would retire the first two batters of the inning before allowing a two-out double to Papierski, his second of the game. Ferrer would walk Corey Joyce and that would chase him from the game. Jordan Weems would come into the game to replace Ferrer and induce a flyout in two pitches to strand the runners and retire the side. Ferrer would finish with a final line of 0.2 inning pitched, allowing one hit, one walk and one strikeout, grabbing his fifth hold of the season.

Miguel Diaz would enter the game in the ninth inning for the Mud Hens. Diaz would get Alu to flyout before surrendering a one-out single to Kieboom. Diaz would strikeout Mazara and get Blankenhorn to popout to put an end to the offensive night for the Red Wings.

Weems would remain in the game for the Red Wings, attempting to convert a four-out save. John Valente would pinch-hit for Carpenter to open the inning and would groundout. Nevin would strikeout and Meadows would popout to end the game and give Weems the four-out save, his fifth of the season.
