The Tigers’ starting rotation took a blow on Tuesday, when Opening Day starter Eduardo Rodriguez was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left index finger pulley rupture. The team also placed outfielder Matt Vierling on the 10-day injured list with low back soreness. Both moves are retroactive to Monday.
Rodriguez has been one of the best pitchers in the Majors this season, going 4-4 with a 2.13 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 67 2/3 innings over 11 starts. His 0.975 WHIP is tied for fifth-best in MLB. The 30-year-old left-hander pitched six strong innings against the White Sox on Sunday, striking out six and allowing one run.
