INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Toledo Mud Hens defeated the Indianapolis Indians 4-1 on Thursday night at Victory Field in Indianapolis

The pitching matchup consisted of Garrett Hill for the Mud Hens and Cam Alldred for the Indians.

Justyn-Henry Malloy hit a leadoff single to get the Mud Hens in the hit column right away. Kerry Carpenter would follow with a lineout. Then, Andre Lipcius would draw a walk to put two runners on base for the Mud Hens. Alldred would then get Parker Meadows to groundout and Grant Witherspoon to flyout to end the inning and escape the jam.

Hill would retire the Indians in order to begin his outing, striking out both Nick Gonzales and Endy Rodriguez and getting Jared Triolo to flyout to centerfield.

Andrew Knapp would leadoff the second inning with a single against Alldred, followed by a walk from Michael Papierski. Alldred would get Corey Joyce to ground into a double play to erase a runner, putting a runner at third base and two outs. Jermaine Palacios would hit an RBI single to put the Mud Hens on the board first for a 1-0 lead. Palacios however would get picked off and caught stealing to end the inning.

Hill would return to the bump for a second inning of work, starting the inning by striking out Cal Mitchell. Canaan Smith-Njigba hit a one-out double to start a threat for the Indians. Hill would respond by striking out Aaron Shackelford for the second out. Ryan Vilade would draw a two-out walk to put a second runner on base. Hill would escape the jam by striking out Grant Koch to end the inning and keep the score at 1-0.

Malloy drew a leadoff walk to open the third inning against Alldred. Alldred would then induce a Carpenter lineout and flyouts from Lipcius and Meadows to end the inning and strand Malloy a second time.

Hill would return in the third inning, inducing a Chavez Young groundout to start the inning. Gonzales would draw a walk, and Rodriguez would groundout to move Gonzales to second base. Triolo would come through for the Indians with an RBI single, tying the game at 1-1. Triolo would steal second base before Hill would strikeout Mitchell for a second time to end the inning. That would end the night for Hill, who would finish with 3.0 innings pitched, allowing one run on two hits, two walks and six strikeouts.

Alldred would return for the fourth inning, retiring the first two hitters as Witherspoon lined out and Knapp grounded out. Papierski would reach on an error before Joyce flied out to left to end the inning, and end the night for Alldred. Alldred’s final line was 4.0 innings pitched, allowing one run on three hits and three walks. Both starters left with a no-decision.

Billy Lescher would enter the game to make his Triple-A debut for the Mud Hens in the fourth inning. Lescher would retire his first two hitters, getting Smith-Njigba to groundout and Shackelford to popout. Vilade would hit a two-out double, but would be stranded after Koch flied out to end the inning.

John O’Reilly would replace Alldred and come on to pitch in the fifth inning. O’Reilly would retire the side in order for the first time in the game. Palacios would groundout, Malloy struck out and Carpenter grounded out to give O’Reilly a 12-pitch inning.

Lescher would return for the fifth inning. Lescher would yet again retire the first two hitters of the inning, with a Young popout and a Gonzales flyout. Rodriguez would hit a two-out single to keep the inning alive. Lescher would hold it there as he struck out Triolo to end the frame and hit outing. Lescher’s Triple-A debut was 2.0 innings pitched, allowing two hits and one strikeout.

O’Reilly would return for a second inning of work in the sixth inning. Lipcius grounded out to begin the inning, but Meadows would beat out a groundball to third for a single. Meadows would be stranded after a Witherspoon popout and a Knapp strikeout.

Chavez Fernander would enter to pitch the sixth inning for the Mud Hens. Fernander would hand Mitchell a hat trick after his third strikeout and followed by striking out Smith-Njigba. Shackelford would be hit by a pitch with two outs and steal second base to put the go-ahead run on second base for the Indians. Vilade and Koch would draw back-to-back two-out walks to load the bases for Indianapolis. After a mound visit, Fernander would induce a flyout from Young to retire the side and escape the jam unscathed.

O’Reilly would come back out for a third inning of work in the seventh inning. O’Reilly would induce a Papierski flyout and a Joyce groundout to retire the first two batters of the inning. Palacios would come up with a two-out double and would come home to score on a RBI single by Malloy to put the Mud Hens up 2-1. That would chase O’Reilly from the game and bring Angel Perdomo into the game. Perdomo would strikeout Carpenter to end the inning. That would finish O’Reilly’s book, marked with 2.2 innings pitched allowing one run on three hits and two strikeouts. O’Reilly would be handed the loss, dropping his record to 0-3.

Fernander would return to pitch the bottom of the seventh inning. Gonzales would strikeout to open the inning, followed by a Rodriguez popout. Triolo would draw a two-out walk to chase Fernander from the game. Seth Elledge would enter the game and get Mitchell to lineout to end the inning. Fernander’s final line would read 1.2 innings pitched, allowing three walks and three strikeouts. Fernander would pick up his first win of the season in Triple-A, improving to 1-0.

Lipcius would draw a leadoff walk against Perdomo to get the Mud Hens rolling in the eighth inning. Meadows would strikeout for the first out. Witherspoon was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. A wild pitch would move Lipcius and Witherspoon to third and second base respectively. Knapp would strikeout for the second out. Papierski would put the nail in Indianapolis’ coffin with a two-out, two-run double to put the Mud Hens up 4-1. Joyce would strikeout to end the inning, but the damage was already done. Perdomo’s final line was 1.1 innings allowing two runs on one hit, one walk and four strikeouts.

Elledge would return to pitch the eighth inning. Smith-Njigba would line out to start the inning. Shackelford would reach with a one-out single. Vilade would strikeout looking and Koch grounded out to end the inning. Elledge’s night would end there, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and one strikeout, picking up his second hold.

Yerry De Los Santos would enter to pitch the ninth inning for Indianapolis. A Palacios lineout and a Malloy strikeout would be the first two outs of the inning for De Los Santos. Carpenter would join the parade with a two-out single. Lipcius would strikeout to end the night for the Mud Hens offense. De Los Santo’ final line would be 1.0 inning pitched, allowinf one hit and two strikeouts.

Aneurys Zabala would enter to pitch the ninth inning for the Mud Hens in a save situation. Zabala would induce a Young lineout and a Gonzales flyout to put the Indians on the edge of defeat. Rodriguez would draw a walk to keep the game alive. But then, Zabala would strikeout Triolo on three pitches to lock down the Mud Hens victory. Zabala’s final line was 1.0 inning pitched, allowing one walk and one strikeout.
