Burgess’ First Double-A Hit Highlights Erie’s Sunday Win

Erie was able to score first in the second inning. Jake Holton smoked a one-out double. With two out, Gage Workman advanced Holton with an infield single. Luis Santana then lined a double off the left-field fence, scoring Holton with the game’s first run.

Erie tacked on a second run in the bottom of the third inning. Andrew Navigato, who had hit a double, tried to advance to third on a short wild pitch. Tim Susnara, the Bowie catcher, threw the ball away, allowing Navigato to score.

Brant Hurter threw the first four frames for the Howlers. He scattered four singles and did not walk a batter over his four shutout frames. Hurter struck out seven batters.

The SeaWolves got some important insurance runs in the sixth inning. Erie loaded the bases with one out against reliever Nolan Hoffman. Colin Burgess then pulled a two-run single, his first Double-A hit, extending the ‘Wolves lead to 4-0. Trei Cruz followed with a run-scoring ground out to make it 5-0.

RJ Petit (1-1) earned the win for Erie with two hitless innings of relief. Sean Guenther also worked hitless relief for Erie, retiring all five batters he faced. Chayce McDermott (4-5) started for Bowie and took the loss.

The Baysox made it interesting in the ninth inning. Michael Bienlien allowed the first three batters to reach including a run-scoring single hit by Billy Cook. Andrew Magno relieved him and struck out his first two batters. Then, both TT Bowens and Susnara walked on full counts. Susnara’s scored Bowie’s second run. Magno then retired Anthony Servideo on a ground ball to first base, ending the game and earning Magno his first save of the season.

Erie hits the road for a two-week trip starting in Harrisburg. Keider Montero opposes Alemao Hernandez on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
