Toledo, OH – The Toledo Mud Hens ended the first week of a two-week long road trip with a 7-2 loss to the St. Paul Saints.

Louis Varland started the game on the mound for St. Paul to wrap up the series against Toledo. Varland was able to reread the side after facing a minimum of three batters. Justyn-Henry Malloy roped single off the wall but a back pick getting the ball in, saw him being tagged out at first.

Bryan Sammons started the game on the mound for Mud Hens. Sammons had a rough start to the inning, an error allowed Anthony Prato to reach second base to lead off the inning. Trevor Larnach launched a two-run home run to put the Saints up 2-0. Following Larncach’s home run Kyle Garlick hit a solo home run to put back-to-back home runs on the board for the Saints and hold a 3-0 lead over the Hens after one.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Saints threatened again loading up the bases with two outs. Sammons was able to work his way out of the jam with a strikeout to end the inning, stranding all their baserunners.

Varland ended the inning the third inning without allowing a baserunner, allowing him to face a minimum of nine batters through the first three innings of the ball game.

Bryan Sammons day finished his day pitching two innings for the Hens before Matt Wislerentered the game from the bullpen to pitch the third inning. Wisler got the first two batters he faced out but then Austin Martin roped a single to get on board. Ernie Yak then reached on an error that would’ve ended the inning for the Mud Hens. Following the error, Alex de Goti slugged a three-run home run to go up 6-0 after three.

Parker Meadows put the Mud Hens’ first run on the board, leading off the fourth inning with a solo home run for his 16th home run of the season to make it a 6-1 ball game. Varland bounced back by getting the next three Mud Hen batters out to end the inning.

Layne Henderson entered the game to pitch the bottom of the fourth inning for the Mud Hens. Henderson worked around a one-out walk to pitch a scoreless inning.

Sean Gunther entered the game to pitch the bottom of the sixth inning for the Mud Hens and quickly found himself in trouble after allowing a lead-off double for the Saints. Gunther was able to work his way out of the jam standing the leaf off double at second.

Luis Varland’s day finished after pitching six innings of one-run baseball for the Saints. Cole Sands entered the game from the bullpen in the seventh inning for the Saints and pitched a scoreless inning to take the game to the eighth.

In the top of the eighth inning, Joe Rizzo touched them all after hitting a solo home run to make it a 6-2 ball game.

In the bottom of the eight, the Saints responded quickly after a lead-off double. With a runner on second, Kyle Garlick singled to score a run and make it a 7-2 ball game.

Ronny Henriquez entered the game in the ninth inning and retired the side without allowing a run. Securing the 7-2 win over the Hens.
