The Toledo Mud Hens dropped game one of this week’s six game series vs the Columbus Clippers by a score of 5-3. Toledo is now 14-20 in the second half and 47-61 overall.

Jack O’Loughlin started the game for the Mud Hens. Across 5.0 innings, he gave up two runs on four hits, with two walks and eight strikeouts. Despite the solid outing, he would be credited with the loss in this one. The 23-year-old is now 1-4 with a 5.10 ERA for the Hens this year. In his two starts in August, he’s given up just two runs and struck out 16 across 10.0 innings, yet does not have a win to show for it.

The Hens bullpen was generally good, but suffered one bad inning. Sam Clay gave up three runs in the top of the seventh inning, allowing the Clippers to add some crucial insurance runs. Braden Bristo and Sean Guenther pitched clean eighth and ninth innings respectively.

Tyler Nevin got the Hens on the board with a solo home run to straightaway center field to lead off the bottom of the second inning. Much of the Hens lineup was relatively quiet this evening but Nevin had a great day at the plate, going 3-4 with a home run. It was the lone extra-base hit for the Mud Hens tonight, who recorded seven singles and one homer. Andre Lipcius was the other Hens batter who recorded a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with a run scored.

Down 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Mud Hens loaded the bases with one out. A fielder’s choice and an error allowed Justyn-Henry Malloy to reach and Andre Lipcius to score, and a Joe Rizzo sac fly scored Isan Diaz from third to make it a 5-3 ballgame. Unfortunately for the Hens, the Clippers were able to escape the inning with no further damage, and ultimately hung on to win 5-3.

The Clippers and Mud Hens will face off again tomorrow night at Fifth Third Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M.
