Meyers’ Two Blasts Send Erie to the Eastern League Championship Series

Erie clinched a second consecutive trip to the Eastern League Championship with a 7-3 win to sweep Richmond.

Erie clinched a second consecutive trip to the Eastern League Championship with a 7-3 win to sweep Richmond.

The SeaWolves started the scoring with a pair of runs in the third inning. After a Trei Cruz double, Jace Jung scored him on a sacrifice fly. The next batter, Chris Meyers, blasted a solo home run against starter Hayden Birdsong.

Richmond got a run back against Ty Madden in the fourth when Carter Aldrete scored Brady Whalen on a sacrifice fly.

Ben Malgeri blasted a solo home run to begin the bottom of the fourth and gave Erie a 3-1 lead. Daniel Cabrera followed with a double and later scored on a single by Cruz.

Madden left with two on and one out in the seventh. Adam Wolf would allow his runs to score on a two-run single by Will Wilson. Madden went 6.1 innings and was charged with three runs on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Meyers put the exclamation point on his second home run, a three-run blast, in the bottom of the seventh. It extended Erie’s lead to 7-3.

Tyler Mattison finished the ballgame with two frames. He struck out five of six batters he faced.

Madden earned the win and Birdsong took the loss.

Erie begins the best-of-three championship round against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Sunday at Mirabito Stadium in Binghamton.
