Rosters for the 2024 All-Star Game were announced on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. ET and the Detroit Tigers will have two representatives to the summer classic. Starting pitcher Tarik Skubal and outfielder Riley Greene were both selected for their first All-Star Game appearances.
These were fairly obvious choices, but none more than Tarik Skubal. Over the past year, Skubal holds a 2.66 ERA and 2.45 FIP across 179 1⁄3 innings of work with 215 strikeouts to just 34 walks. Over the last 365 days, Skubal is the most valuable pitcher in baseball per FanGraphs version of WAR (fWAR).
Skubal will be joined in AL manager Bruce Bochy’s rotation by White Sox lefty Garrett Crochett, Royals lefty Cole Ragans and right-hander Seth Lugo, Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck, Mariners RHP Logan Gilbert, and Orioles right-hander Corbin Burnes. That’s a pretty incredible rotation but Skubal stands above the pack.
Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo will manage the NL squad in a re-match of the 2023 World Series managerial matchup.
Meanwhile, 23-year-old Riley Greene has come into his own as one of the top overall outfielders in the game. He currently holds a sterling .358 on-base percentage with 17 home runs and a .370 wOBA. Greene has has been the 10th most valuable outfielder overall this season.
The starting positional roster was chosen by fan ballot, and Greene didn’t make the cut. But it’s probably all the sweeter than Greene was chosen on the players’ ballot by his fellow major leaguers. All pitchers were selected by the players as well.
Congratulations to both Tigers. They’ve easily earned this honor. Reese Olson and Jack Flaherty also had good cases, but the two who made it were no-brainers really.
The 2024 All-Star game will take place on July 16 at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.
