The Week That Was: December 9-15

Bless You Boys

Hello friends! It’s actually been a fairly light news week in baseball all around, but obviously with me writing these posts the night before, we missed a major baseball breaking story that hit late last Sunday, and that’s the signing of Juan Soto. The news of Soto heading to the Mets has been all that people want to talk about all week, so we’ll get into that in a moment.

There have been a few other notable hot stove move, the biggest being an All-Star trade between the Yankees and Braves (read more below), and Kyle Tucker making his way to the Cubs and possibly helping their standing in the AL Central.

Things will get fairly quiet news-wise over the next couple of weeks as teams slow down on making big moves around the holidays, and baseball writers try to take a little time off as well, so don’t be surprised if there’s not a ton of splashy news over the next 10-14 days or so.

Soto Madness

The biggest free agent name of this offseason was Juan Soto, and it was obvious he was going to make some big money when he finally did sign. That big money came from Steve Cohen, who does not seem to care about things like luxury tax or overpaying for players, because he was going to have Soto and he didn’t care what it took to get him.

Soto signed with the other New York team for $765 million for 15 years (the Yankees apparently offered $760 over 16 years). Soto got a $75 million signing bonus, and will then net about $46 million a year over the rest of his contract. There’s also an opt-out escalation, where Soto can opt out after 2029 but the Mets have the option of offering an extra $4 million per season for the rest of his contract to trump the opt-out. If so, his contract would be worth $805 million.

That’s the largest sports contract in history. (don’t quote me on that, but I’m pretty sure it’s true)
