July 4th Fireworks! MLB Has Yielded Great July 4th Moments

MLB Vault
July 4th has produced some great moments throughout Major League Baseball history. It started with Lou Gehrig’s retirement speech and subsequent jersey retirement of his #4. He would be the first player to ever have his number retired by a team. In 1980, Nolan Ryan recorded his 3,000th strikeout. In 1983, Dave Righetti tossed a no-hitter. Finally, the Braves and Mets battled out a classic NINETEEN inning game in 1985 that concluded on July 5th at 4am ET.
