Detroit Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd called athletic trainer Doug Teter, manager AJ Hinch, pitching coach Chris Fetter and catcher Wilson Ramos to the mound after a 91.7 mph fastball to Leury Garcia in the second inning.
After a short conversation, Boyd walked off the mound and into the clubhouse. He departed from Thursday’s second game in the middle of a 2-2 count to Garcia with no outs. He was only 36 pitches into his start. The Tigers later said Boyd departed with left knee tendinitis.
Right-hander Michael Fulmer entered out of the bullpen as the replacement.

Entering Thursday, Boyd had a 1.82 ERA through 34⅔ innings in five starts. He had six walks, 22 strikeouts and just one home run allowed. Against the White Sox, he gave up three hits and one walk, with two strikeouts.
After Boyd left the game, Garcia ended his at-bat with an RBI single against Fulmer. The run was charged to Boyd.
