Tigers’ Turnbull spins MLB’s 5th no-no of ’21

Detroit Tigers

Right-hander Spencer Turnbull made history on Tuesday night, throwing the eighth no-hitter in Tigers history and the fifth in the Majors this season in a 5-0 win over the Mariners at T-Mobile Park.

Turnbull struck out nine, including Mitch Haniger for the final out, and walked just two batters — rookie Jarred Kelenic to lead off the fourth inning and José Marmolejos leading off the ninth — in the 50th start of his career. The 28-year-old Turnbull, who took a Major League-high 17 losses in 2019, spun Detroit’s first no-hitter since Justin Verlander threw the second of his career on May 7, 2011.

Turnbull threw 117 pitches, topping his previous career high of 111, which got him only 5 2/3 innings on May 11, 2019.

Turnbull’s no-hitter was the second thrown against the Mariners this season, following John Means’ gem in the Orioles’ 6-0 win on May 5.

Turnbull’s bid for history was preserved thanks to third baseman Jeimer Candelario’s athletic snag of Haniger’s 108.4 mph grounder to lead off the seventh. Candelario also homered and doubled.
