Hill and Holland to the injured list, Cameron and Lange recalled

Bless You Boys

The injury carousel keeps turning for the Detroit Tigers. Derek Hill made a great leaping catch at the wall in center field during the first inning of Wednesday’s contest with the Seattle Mariners. To no one’s surprise, he’s been moved to the injured list after injuring his shoulder in the process. Outfielder Daz Cameron has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo in his place.

But wait, there’s more.

After the game, left hander Derek Holland was also moved to the injured list with shoulder inflammation. In his place, the Tigers are bringing back right hander Alex Lange from Toledo as well.

Cameron missed much of the spring with a an arm injury suffered in winter ball in Dominican Republic. Then he hit the injured list again on May 4 with a wrist fracture. He played his first games on a rehab assignment with the Single-A Lakeland Flying Tigers before being assigned to Triple-A Toledo on May 19. Since that point he’s hit .338 with a .400 OBP and a pair of home run in 85 plate appearances. And while he isn’t quite Derek Hill in center field, Cameron should have no trouble playing average or better defense at the position. He’s penciled into Thursday’s lineup against his father Mike’s old team, batting in the sixth spot and starting in center field.

As for Lange, he made 15 appearances in April and May with outstanding strikeout to walk numbers. However, major league hitters teed off on him for five home runs in 13 13 innings of work. He was demoted to Toledo in mid-May, and has struggled to find his control with the Mud Hens. Only two of his seven appearances with the Hens have been scoreless, so he’s not exactly coming in on a hot streak.

With a bullpen day, led by Tyler Alexander, scheduled for the Tigers on Thursday afternoon in Spencer Turnbull’s spot, the bullpen needed a fresh arm anyway. However the Mud Hens just don’t offer any great options at the moment either.
