Casey Mize needs Tommy John surgery

Tigers right-hander Casey Mize will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, manager A.J. Hinch said on Friday.

Mize’s ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow is still intact, but a visit with Dr. Keith Meister showed it has stretched to the point that it has lost elasticity.

The 25-year-old Mize, taken No. 1 overall in the 2018 Draft by the Tigers, last pitched on April 14. He’s gone 7-13 with a 4.29 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP across 39 big league appearances — all of them starts — while striking 148 over 188 2/3 innings.
