Detroit Tigers doubleheader Friday postponed because of rain; doubleheader now Saturday

The Detroit Tigers will play three games in two days, with another left on the schedule to make up at a later date.

Sitting out Thursday to protest racial injustice and inequality, the Tigers were supposed to play a doubleheader Friday against the Minnesota Twins at Comerica Park before finishing the four-game series with single games Saturday and Sunday.

The plan, once again, has changed.

Because of inclement weather, Friday’s doubleheader has been postponed, meaning the Tigers (13-16) will play a straight seven-inning doubleheader with the Twins (20-12) at 1:10 p.m. Saturday. For now, there remains one game scheduled for Sunday. Rescheduling information for Game 2 of Friday’s doubleheader will be announced at a later date.

Thursday’s protest happened because of the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin, after three NBA playoff games, the NHL playoffs and WNBA games were postponed. Six other MLB games were postponed.

“We stood united with a lot of teams in baseball about making a change, and that won’t ever change in my mind,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “We have to get better. This country has to get better and respect everyone. That’s what we hope happens.”
