The Tigers are close to an agreement with free-agent outfielder Nomar Mazara, a source told MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi on Thursday. The club has not confirmed the deal, which will pay Mazara $1.75 million plus incentives, according to a report by MLB Network insider Jon Heyman.
Mazara, just 25, was non-tendered by the White Sox in December after disappointing in his one season with the club. The lefty swinger hit just one home run with a .589 OPS in 42 games, but he won’t turn 26 until April.
After averaging 20 homers in 134 games in each of his first four seasons with the Rangers, his ceiling remains high as he enters his prime years.
