The Chicago White Sox took the rubber match of the series against the Detroit Tigers 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. In the getaway game, the offense of the Tigers must’ve taken the early bird flight out of O’Hare. José Ureña came off the injured list to make his 11th start of the season and looked okay allowing three runs over five innings, but it’s never enough when your offense is going to put up a big ole’ goose egg.
All the action in the game came in the second inning. Adam Eaton, who got on with a one-out triple, came around to score on a single off the bat of Andrew Vaughn to get the White Sox on the board. A Nick Madrigal double moved Vaughn to third, and then both gentlemen were driven home by none other than Certified Tiger Killer Tim Anderson to push the lead to 3-0, a number that would stick for the remainder of the day.
The Tigers did that thing where they don’t score runs, and crazy enough, that did not create an environment conducive to winning the baseball game. Dylan Cease was unceasing when the Tigers were able to get runners on base as they couldn’t come up with any timely hits. Cease threw seven innings of shutout ball, only allowing five hits while striking out 10 and walking one.
Jason Foley, who was called up Sunday morning to take the roster spot of the injured Michael Fulmer, made his major league debut in the sixth inning. The situation got a little sticky for him as he hit two of the first three batters he faced, but was able to get Tim Anderson to ground out to first base to keep the White Sox from scoring off him. Both Daniel Norris and Bryan Garcia threw clean innings in relief as well.
Just not a lot to report. Two extra base hits, from Eric Haase and Jonathan Schoop, were as much power as the Tigers could offer, although Niko Goodrum had a home run taken away by White Sox center fielder Adam Engel, who timed his leap well and brought a deep fly ball back in right center field. Derek Hill and Akil Baddoo had the speed game available, each reaching once and stealing second. Overall, the White Sox made it quite clear in this series why they’re the class of this division these days.
