EASTLAKE, OH – The West Michigan Whitecaps showcased starting pitcher Adam Wolf in a homecoming, but the bullpen struggled for the third straight day as part of a 6-3 loss to the Lake County Captains on Thursday night at Classic Park.

Wolf, originally from Milan, OH, which sits roughly an hour away from Classic Park, spun six innings of two-run baseball in his Whitecaps debut. The lefty who spent his entire 2019 season in West Michigan struck out four and allowed just four hits in his High-A debut. The loss marks the second four-game losing streak in June, in which the ‘Caps have a record of 5-10.

The Captains took the lead in the opening inning on a throwing error by first baseman Eliezer Alfonzo but tied the game with a solo home run by Corey Joyce – his first as a Whitecap – before Daniel Cabrera’s RBI-single in the sixth put the ‘Caps ahead 2-1. The Captains tied the game on an Aaron Bracho base hit before the Caps took the lead back in the seventh on a run-scoring single from Alfonzo to take a 3-2 edge. In the seventh, the Whitecaps bullpen entered and was unable to hold the lead, as reliever Sam Kessler walked three batters before a game-tying RBI-single by Brayan Rocchio to knot the contest at three. In the eighth, Raynel Delgado’s two-run double put the Captains ahead for good as West Michigan’s relievers gave up four runs for the second straight night.

Captains reliever Jared Janczak (3-0) tossed a scoreless inning to earn his third win of the season, while Bryce Tassin (0-2) gave up two runs in relief to take the loss. Lake County reliever Nic Enright pitched a scoreless ninth to secure his third save. The Captains improve to 21-18 as the Whitecaps fall for the fourth straight game to 19-19. Eliezer Alfonzo’s run-scoring single in the seventh extended his hitting streak to a season-best eight games.
