West Michigan Whitecaps

PEORIA, IL – The West Michigan Whitecaps got offense early and late as part of a 9-4 victory over the Peoria Chiefs on Wednesday night at Dozer Park.

West Michigan opened the six-game series in Peoria with a four-run first and went without scoring a run until the ninth inning, when they plated five more runs. The ‘Caps left a season-high 15 runners on base but tallied double-digit walks and hits in the victory.

The Whitecaps scored early and often against Chiefs starter Connor Lunn with a four-run first. A bases-loaded walk to Cooper Johnson preceded a two-run single by Rey Rivera to highlight the frame. Peoria struck for three in the fourth frame, highlighted by a two-run single by Leandro Cedeno to cut the lead to 4-3. After stranding eight baserunners in three of the late innings, West Michigan tallied five more runs in a frame highlighted by Rivera once again. The first baseman completed a four-RBI night by collecting a two-run double to begin the inning. Wenceel Perez added a run-scoring single before Peoria infielder Francisco Hernandez blasted a 458-foot homer to conclude the scoring.

Whitecaps reliever Austin Bergner (1-0) collected his first victory by tossing 2.2 scoreless innings and racking up five strikeouts. Lunn (3-3) gave up four runs in four frames in taking his third loss. West Michigan pitcher Michael Beinlein, who joined the team on Tuesday, finished the ballgame by tossing the final two innings to notch his first save of the season. The Whitecaps improve to 23-24 on the season as Peoria drops to 19-30. Rivera provided a huge lift offensively to lead the way, but Eric De La Rosa, Trei Cruz, and Andrew Navigato, who was added to the roster on Tuesday, each reached base three times.
