Detroit Tigers roster moves ahead of MLB’s second half: Nomar Mazara down, Derek Hill up

Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Tigers made a few moves Friday morning, ahead of their day-night doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins at Comerica Park.

Going: Outfielder Nomar Mazara has been designated for assignment, with infielder Willi Castro optioned to Triple-A Toledo.

Coming: Outfielder Derek Hill and infielder Isaac Paredes are up from Toledo, with left-handed pitcher Miguel Del Pozo designated as the 27th man for the doubleheader.

Mazara, 26, has been a disappointing free-agent signing after the Tigers took a flyer on him for one year and $1.75 million. He’s batting .212 with three home runs and 19 RBIs in 165 at-bats over 50 games. He homered at least 19 times in four straight seasons in 2016-19.

The oft-injured Hill last played during a doubleheader June 30 vs. Cleveland, returning from a shoulder injury suffered three weeks earlier while making a catch against the wall at Comerica Park. The 25-year-old was the Tigers’ first-round pick in 2014 out of Elk Grove, Calif. He has played 23 games in his MLB career over the past two seasons, batting 5-for-25.

Paredes, 22, has 11 appearances this season, with five hits in 29 at-bats. He batted .220 (22-for-100) in 34 games last season. The Free Press ranked the third baseman as the Tigers’ No. 4 prospect entering the season.
