Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene rage in doubleheader sweep

Bless You Boys

Toledo Mud Hens at Columbus Clippers (postponed)

They were rained out in Columbus on Thursday. Instead the game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday. Friday night, RHP Pedro Payano (2-3, 5.67 ERA) is scheduled take on the Clippers’ RHP Heath Fillmeyer (1-5, 8.02 ERA), but as Matthew Boyd was supposed to make a rehab start on Thursday, presumably he’ll end up starting Friday, with Payano pushed to Saturday.

The big boys just wrecked Curve pitching throughout Thursday’s doubleheader. Spencer Torkelson went 7-for-7 over the two games, and as usual, everything hit was like a thunderbolt. Tork mashed a two-run shot in the first inning with Ryan Kreidler aboard to open the scoring. Joey Wentz allowed a run in the second inning, but settled in for a solid outing as he continues to build his velo and command post-TJ.

This game became a foregone conclusion in the third as the SeaWolves scored 10. Torkelson had the first RBI on a solid line drive single. Kerry Carpenter and Andre Lipcius came through with RBI hits as well. They’d already scored five times when John Valente and Drew Ward walked back-to-back. Danny Woodrow singled in Valente, and Christopher Proctor walked to bring Greene to the dish with the bases loaded. He did this.

The dynamic duo came back for more in the sixth. Greene led off with a double, and Kreidler walked, setting up Torkelson, who drilled a double to the wall in center field to score them both. Torkelson advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a Lipcius ground out to complete the scoring.

Torkelson: 4-4, 3 R, 4 RBI, HR, 2B

Greene: 2-4, 2 R, 4 RBI, HR, 2B

Erie SeaWolves 6, Altoona Curve 0 (Gm 2)(F/7)(box)

Elvin Rodriguez spun 6 13 innings of shutout ball in this one, but was also overshadowed by the big bats. They didn’t take long to get going as Greene, Torkelson, and Kreidler went back-to-back-to-back in the bottom of the first. Torkelson added a solo shot in the fifth as well, making it a three dinger day, and Drew Ward got in on the action with a two-run shot in the sixth.

Torkelson: 3-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 HR

Greene: 1-4, R, RBI, HR, 2 SO

Valente: 2-3, R

Rodriguez (W, 4-4): 4.2 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 SO

Starter Adam Wolf was rocked early in this one, and the offense couldn’t get much going after an early surge. Wolf was knocked out in the third with five runs in after allowing a pair of home runs. The ‘Caps scored first, as Ulrich Bojarski singled in Andrew Navigato in the top of the second inning. In the third, Gage Workman turned and cranked a two-run shot to right field with Jose King aboard. Sandel De La Cruz took over from Wolf in the third and was electric, punching out eight of the 10 hitters he faced to get them through the fifth with a chance at a comeback, but it never arrived.

Workman: 1-4, R, 2 RBI, HR, 2 SO

Cabrera: 2-4, 2B, SO

Coming Up Next: They’ll play two on Friday, with first pitch set for 4:00 p.m. EDT.

Lakeland Flying Tigers 12, Palm Beach Cardinals 3 (box)

Isaac Paredes cracked a two-run shot in his first rehab appearance with the Flying Tigers, but they didn’t need his help. A 12 hit attack powered them to a blow out win over the Cardinals on Thursday. Eliezer Alfonzo tripled and doubled, collecting three RBI and scoring twice to pace the Tigers’ offense. Ben Malgeri and Kingston Liniak had two-hit games, while Colt Keith singled to keep his roll going.

Alfonzo: 3-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, 3B, 2B

Paredes: 1-2, 3 R, 2 RBI, HR, 3 BB

Myers: 1-4, 2 R, RBI, BB, 3 SO

Liniak: 2-5, R, RBI, 2B

Coming Up Next: LHP Jack O’Loughlin (3-0, 2.25 ERA) is angling for a call up to West Michigan. He’ll get the ball in this one, set for 6:30 p.m. EDT. The Cardinals haven’t announced a starter yet.
