Detroit Tigers finalize 2022 Opening Day roster. These 28 players made the team

Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Tigers have revealed their Opening Day roster, finalizing the 28 players expected to be active for Friday’s opener against the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park.

The active roster, though, should change throughout the first month of the season, considering three players are on the 10-day injured list: left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin, right-handed reliever Kyle Funkhouser and outfielder Derek Hill.

Righty starter Michael Pineda and righty reliever Wily Peralta (minor-league contract) are building up their stamina in the minor leagues.

JEFF SEIDEL: Tigers’ Javier Baez has flair, amazing plays — and deep grief from childhood

ROSTER MOVES: Jose Cisnero to 60-day injured list; Willi Castro to Triple-A

Neither pitched in a spring training game, since they had lengthy waits for their work visas, so they must get comfortable with live competition before the Tigers rely on them. Pineda will make two starts in Triple-A Toledo.

Here is the Tigers’ Opening Day 28-man roster:

Catchers (3): Tucker Barnhart, Dustin Garneau, Eric Haase (also plays LF).

Infielders (6): Miguel Cabrera (DH, 1B), Spencer Torkelson (1B), Jonathan Schoop (2B), Javier Baez (SS), Jeimer Candelario (3B), Harold Castro (UTIL).

Outfielders (4): Robbie Grossman (RF), Akil Baddoo (LF, CF), Austin Meadows (LF), Victor Reyes (LF, CF, RF).
