Game notes: Granted, it’s only the Tigers’ fifth series in Los Angeles against the Dodgers since interleague play began in 1995 —27 years! — but they have a chance to notch their first-ever series win at Dodger Stadium. (It’s only the second time the Tigers have even had a shot at it; they won the second game of the June 2005 series only to drop the rubber match, 3-1.)

For that to happen, the Tigers will likely need a repeat of Saturday night’s victorious formula: Five or so strong innings by the starter (former 27th-round pick Beau Brieske gave up a leadoff homer, then shut out the Dodgers the rest of the way) followed by four innings of shutdown relief by the bullpen. In short, it would be a good time for left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez to continue his streak of quality starts (six innings, three or fewer earned runs), which sits at two. The Tigers lost both, but Rodriguez took no-decisions, with 11 strikeouts and three walks over 12 innings combined.

The Tigers could also use something resembling a repeat of their output at the plate from Saturday, when they scored more than three runs for just the sixth time in 20 games this season. The big mover was Javier Báez, who went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. The good news for the Tigers: Báez has arguably the best track record on the roster against today’s starter, Walker Buehler (who finish fourth in NL Cy Young voting last season). The bad news: Because it’s Báez, it’s a bit of a hit-or-miss history. In 13 at-bats against the righty, he has three hits — a double and two home runs – and three strikeouts. The Tigers’ other primary import from the NL, Tucker Barnhart, is 3-for-9 against Buehler in his career with one double.

The Tigers have the day off Monday, followed by a two-game series at Comerica Park on Tuesday-Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. (With a 7:10 and 1:10 p.m. starts, that’s 18 innings of baseball in approximately 18 hours.) The Dodgers, meanwhile, get Monday off to prepare for a visit from their hated rivals, the San Francisco Giants, but maybe they’ll be looking ahead to that series rather than focusing on finishing off the Tigers.
