TIGERS TAKEAWAYS: How Detroit crafted MLB’s best bullpen in April

NEWSLETTER: Is May the month to turn the Tigers’ home run power on?

Tigers lineup: TBA.

Game notes: The Tigers lost two of three to the Los Angeles Dodgers before an off day Monday. The Pirates only won one game in their series vs. the San Diego Padres. EAch team ranks in the bottom 10 in MLB in runs, home runs and OPS. Pittsburgh isn’t very good at pitching either, allowing the third-most runs and fourth-most walks. Both Detroit and Pittsburgh struggle to miss bats, with Tigers pitchers ranking 29th in strikeouts and the Pirates ranking 25th.

Wilson, a former Atlanta Braves fourth-round pick, hasn’t made it to the fifth inning yet in four starts this season. He had his first scoreless outing Wednesday vs. the Milwaukee Brewers, allowing one hit and striking out four in four frames. Pineda was very good in his season debut April 21 vs. the New York Yankees (no runs and three hits in five innings) but less so Wednesday vs. the Minnesota Twins (four runs and seven hits in five innings).

The teams have a quick turnaround to finish the two-game set: Wednesday’s matchup starts at 1:10 p.m. Then the Tigers hit the road for four games in Houston while the Pirates travel for a series in Cincinnati.
